Catching up after 7 long years, dont know where to start .

We are now located in the Niobrara River valley north central Nebraska. And we now raise exclusively the BEAUTIFUL AMERICAN OBERHASLI

Why the American Oberhasli? Because in my opinion they are simply the BEST!!!

They are natural born milkers.. each and everyone that has blessed my farm I have loved.. even the ones that were born here naturally went to the milk stand with an inborn willingness to allow themselves to be milked without problems.. I've never had to "train" one to milk yet. They give large amounts of great tasting milk!! They are a hardy breed unlike some of their cousins. Friendly love attention, smaller then other dairy breeds with the exception of the Nigerian Dwarf. Their rich bay color pattern is something I've always enjoyed and because they are all basically the same color I can now focus on more important things like conformation, mammary, and production!

And the occasional LGD pups

We are active members of the American Dairy Goat Association we practice Linear Appraisal and DHIR we are also an annual testing herd. We a enjoy showing and will attend The Nebraska State Fair, adding as many other shows as money and time allows.

Proudly raising the best American Oberhasli I can, to be competitive in the show ring and to fill the milk bucket with great tasting milk. I’ve purchased from some of the best herds possible so that you and I can be proud of our breeding programs. PlayRite Farm also has an occasional litter of 100% Livestock Guard dogs to protect my herd. Pups and Goats available at times.<span style="color: #1c1e21; font-family: "georgia" , serif;">

Praise God.. I am sure God is at work moving mountains and lining things up, i'm sure He already has a place picked out.. it is a major lesson of trust happening here.. do i trust the Lord to see us through or do i TRUST the Lord to see us through...

I have sold about half of my Nigerian Dwarf Goat herd and am trying to hold on to the rest with tooth and nail. i am trying to hear if the Lord wants me to keep them or does He want me to give them up.. at the moment it is very difficult to decide between flesh vers obedience .. I have learned that if the Lord wants you to do something then it will be the desire or your heart. that your heart will line up.. leaving this lifestyle is not the desire of my hear at all.. and there is no peace that comes with completely leaving it.. daily my mind still looks for ways to improve my herd or the products that I look forward to making with the milk. So I am going to believe that the Lord wants us to keep at least some of them for now..

And same goes for the things in the house, i am a total mess emotionally and mentally, since we have no idea where we are going. i don't know if i should part with heavy winter close or summer clothes . will my new house be big enough to contain all my "junk" or do i need to thin down to bare necessity.. Being a woman we like to set up house so i am having a very difficult time here not knowing where, what, when, or how my tomorrow will look . Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-89830315754199116802011-12-04T11:59:00.000-06:002011-12-04T11:59:59.124-06:00OH WOW Never thought it would happen to us....but it did.. because we rent we knew it could happen at any time. The farm we currently rent was sold at auction Dec 1st.. and we have been given until Jan 31 to vacate.. an no at the moment we have no idea were we are going.. I am forced to sell most if not all of my animals and that in itself is a killer to me.. i'd much rather sell all contents in the house and keep my beloved goaties .. but we all know that is not logical.. which way do i go, which way do i go.. I don't know. about all we can do is to put this mess in God's hands and allow him to lead us through to greener pastures ..Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-27601556777610620042011-08-31T19:35:00.000-05:002011-08-31T19:35:43.043-05:00July - August

We have been under an "Excessive Heat Warning" reported by Weather Bug for my area." dangerous heat wave roasting the Nation`s Heartland" with 110* to 115* heat index, with 59% humidity, makes you have to go to the extremes to make sure the animals are going to make it through this mess.. found this article on my FB (facebook) feed this morning with some great ideas for helping to keep the chickens cooled.. Keeping your chickens cool in the heat - National Backyard Chickens | Examiner.co

I have had to take extra measure for the pups now 5 weeks old, this heat is almost 2 much for them so they get to come into the basement and cool their tummies on the basement floor.. they seem to like that also. Today is a dry heat and they are enjoying the pool.

So Far I have been running a fans and changing water numerous times a day. for all the animals.. The Goats have tarps shade put up in each pen, the bigger goats have it figured out, they are on the east side of their pen in the morning and on the west side in front of the barn in the afternoon,, i have some large Cotton wood trees that also helps cast shade over the pens in the afternoon.. otherwise there is not much movement of any kind from the goats during the day..

The rabbits have their cages under mature mulberry trees,, i don't use water bottles cus the rabbits stick to the bottles and it damages their pelts.. what i do is get dish sized towles and wet them down,, they will lay on them and get their tummys wet then the wind that comes from under the cage cools the bun, they seem to really like this..

We haven't lost anything so far which I am gratefull.. I pray for God's Mercy Favor and ProtectionCarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-9507873437104364662011-07-17T20:17:00.002-05:002011-07-18T13:52:27.871-05:00PVC Pipe Milk Stand

I really do need to sit and update my blog. WoW it has been a very busy year.. i will have to update in sections i think.. Never a dull moment when you own and raise animals.. Somewhere in the area of 73 Nigerian Dwarf kids were born from PlayRite Farms Breeding.. around 43 does and 30 buck kids.. WoW.. is right.. 2 sets of quints, 3 set of quads 8 triplets 10 sets of twins and 7 singles...1 dried fetus, 2 still borns,, I only had to assist in one who had he head bent down and wanted to butt his way out., not all were born here but the most were. PlayRite Farm did have a doe that was sold, have a set of quints that had some major complications, the doe and 3 of the kids died but 2 survived, as hard as it is to loose them, we all must focus on those yet living..

So All in All a very good year..and the Lord did multiply us!

However the Devil is most usually right behind HIM ready to steel kill and destroy.. more on this laterCarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-80276951717992184012011-03-31T10:09:00.000-05:002011-03-31T10:09:34.410-05:00Just RamblingSitting here just finished milking.. trying to catch my breath before my next task of feeding everyone and making sure they all have fresh water. It is raining so I will be moving a bit slower today and try to get things done in between the rain if there is such a thing today.. Our goat feeders are all outside and goats don't link getting wet so this make for a rotten day for all of us.. but then again their is alot said about fasting, and how beneficial it is for the cleansing of the body. So even when i do go out to fill the feeders the goats will not venture out int he rain to eat.. wonder which one of us is the smarter ?

Our kidding shed is now full with moms and babies, too cold and wet to let them out, so now we are a bit crowded (not what i planned) and having to use the horse trailer for over flow, I will have 3 due in the next 6 days. One in the trailer now getting ready. Was hoping she would wait until tomorrow so i could name one of the kids April Fools or April Shower. Shekinah has snubbed her grain so that is a good indication that it will be today, her ligaments are gone and i heard her talking to her unborn.. so sweet.

My Kidding season starts off with a big bang.. I had been watching Betty Lou, she was a bit on the wide load side. He was miserable, and i was really worried about her safty and comfort. She comes from a slow growing line that usually hold on to the kids for 150 days. she couldn't walk, she had a hard time getting up or down.. I had another doe in the kidding pens at the same time. Ivy at 146 days decided it was long enough her buns were well done... she goes in to labor and has twins one each, then as Betty hears Ivy's babies crying all heck broke loose, she shot babies out so fast we could hardly keep up.. She blessed us with 5, 4 does and 1 buck. as she was shooting them out and number 5 arrived i was looking and waiting for 6, 7, and 8.. lol..she stopped at 5, this is my first set of quints, we were all very surprised. All have found new homes except the one next to mom,, and she is a keeper

Hubby decided to make corn cob jelly and concord grape jelly.. yes an interesting combination..many may be wondering "what the heck is corn cob jelly" is is just what is says.. first you go out in the field after the harvest and collect a couple of bags of corn cobs. We prefer the red cobs as they have a better flavor and color of the jelly. After we gathered them we threw them in the corner until a better time to deal with it.. like right now ..

So you take about a dozen cobs and put them in a stock pot, cover with water, you may have to hold the cobs down as they will float.. bring to a biol and let boil for about 20-30 minutes..take cobs out and discard them. then use a cheese cloth and strain the remaining juice. Should be enough to make 3 batches, we used the recipe on the box of pectin box, for grape jelly..

5 cups of corn cob juice

1 box of pectin

1/8 cup lemon juice ( dh idea)

6 cups of white sugar

take the 5 cups of juice in a 6 or 8 quart sauce pan, add box of pectin and lemon juice (optional), bring to a boil, then add the 6 cups of white granulated sugar. Bring to a boil again, boil for 3 minutes.

corn cob jelly

And then he did the grape jelly, but guess what there are no ripe grapes this time of year,, where the heck will he find fresh grape juice for this project

Hubby used frozen concentrate, and you can use any kind of concentrate juice, mix the juice up as you would normall, 3 cans of water and one frozen juice concentrate .. then he fallowed the recipe in the box of pectin

Everything was going so well that it gave me opportunity to take pictures and sell be there if needed. This was a very easy and fast kidding for Vicky in which i am grateful.. I would love and wish that all kiddings went like this one did. A single birth for a first freshener is pretty normal..We all love the Nigerians Dwarf because of the multiple births, but often with multiple births things get tangled and turned the wrong way, so then that is when the owner breeder has to be prepaid to ..yes..go in and assist or take them to the vet .. So do your homework be prepared.
This is something that i advice you to do further research on as there is 2 sides to every coin, Some people don't do anything in fear of abortions and deformities and there is proof that this can do both, so you need to talk to your vet and fellow breeders then make up your own minds

Month before kidding I have talked to breeders that advise to give CD&T, BoSe, and Vit A,D shots along with a dose of wormer one month before kidding, make sure it is a wormer that is supposedly safe for the unborn, such as safe guard or panacur.. I do give the CD&T booster and the BoSe and Vit A,D ,, I also feed Mana pro mineral for it's high content of Copper. and start giving just a little bit of grain

Be careful feeding grain in this trimester as this is the time of kid growth, too much grain can cause the kids to be too big to deliver, a handful, 1/4 cup should be enough

Others like to wait until one week before kidding to worm and yet others wait and worm with in 24 hours after kidding. this is what i do, and i will do a series of 3 times by the time the withholding is over it is then time to milk and i pull kids off at night. .

Trim feet

do an udder clip. i have seen this done two ways #1 shave the rump along with the udder underbelly #2 shave udder and most of belly, down the back side of the rear legs and around the tail. smear KY jelly on the rear to help keep the goo from sticking making clean up easier. The object here is clean.

wat you talking about?

I have been told to wait 45 minutes of hard pushing with no results before you go after the kids

don't panic, take a deep breath have your phone #'s on hand for support as well as help

don't stop once you start to assist.

clean gloved hand with lubricant, go in slowly, 2 fingers at a time, if there is a blockage she will most likely not be completely dilated, spread your fingers out, add another finger, do this until you can get your hand in with out much resistance.

resently learned that Lutalace a drop or two in the lubricant can help dilate, ( warning do not use this if you are pregnant or if you might be pregnant, this will cause you to abort your own child make sure you are wearing gloves ) but in an extreme situation Lutaclace could be a good thing to have on hand

Oxytocin is also a good product to have on hand, if a doe is tiring give a shot of Oxytocin to help stimulate contractions

Have the doe lay on her left side so that you can feel in side of her "horns" channels sometimes kids can hide in a horn and it is tuff to find.

I have found that when in a pickle and things are getting tangled, it is best to find the back legs with tail facing up, cover the hooves so they don't tear the placenta and guide them out and pull with her contractions if you can, if there is no time just pull.

If you start pulling kids, chances are you will have to pull the rest of them also.

sometimes it is really tight inside and you can't turn a kid around, if this is the case, then grab head, then with your hand fallow it down and smooth the legs out along the sides of the tummy then quickly go back to the head grab and pull. this will be a bit tuff for mom cus this will make chest a bit bigger but she can do this, give her some time to dilate but not too much, try to work with contractions

it is always good to watch your doe after kidding until she has passed the afterbirth and is up and eating like nothing happened. if she is still straining chances are there is another one possibly a dead kid, you will have to go and fish it out.

sometime it is a good idea to bounce her stomach, in other words pull up her stomach from underneath as far as you can, sometimes you can feel movement in this position, keep your hands touching the abdomen and let the abdomen fall, if there is still a kid you will feel it bounce on the abdomen wall.

Apply the Uterine Bolus after the invasion,

Preparation H will help reduce the swelling of the vulva.

for and abortion my vet told me to do 5 cc of Pen G for 5 days, check this with your vet to be sure.

when to call or go to the vet. if you can't get the kids out, it is time to go ASAP but call vet in advance so that he/she will meet you.

There is no way that i can cover all of the things that could go wrong, it is best that you have a good relationship with your vet, what i listed here is based only on my limited experience. I do not claim to know it all, and I do not claim to be a vet..And by no means is every situation the same...Do your homework, join goat groups, talk to other breeders, talk to your vet.Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-89122738423519116102011-01-09T00:41:00.001-06:002011-02-01T17:45:48.100-06:00Kidding Time part 2 : Gathering Supplies

what you looking at

Kidding Kit You might want to start this a bit early make a list check it twice ... what I am doing here is combining several lists to attempt to meet the extreme, do the best that you can, and gather as much as you can, chances are you wont need much of your kit but it sure is a time saver when you have it on hand just in case.. the list will be rather long, adjust it to fit your needs :

Storage Place cabinet, cooler, a tool box or a tack box something to hold your supplies so they are handy

Cell Phone - with the emergency phone number of your vet, it seems as if if your going to need a vet it will be late at night or on the weekends.. also the number of your goat mentor, if you don't have one find one.. very important.

Spiral Notebook and a pencil leave it in your tool box so that it is always near by or hang it on the wall. use a pencil instead of a pen or marker because it will not freeze as a pen would, you will need to use this to keep account of who is born to which doe, and who is born first, give a brief color description and left ear ID #, time of birth, number in birth, anything unusual, and weight.

Wear clothes that you don't mind ruining such as cover alls, if you have to assist you will get slimy goo on you

Spool of ribbon to right ID #'s on the kids, this will help keep track of who belongs to whom until everyone is properly tattooed and bonded to their dams or sold.

Digital Camera, set it to display the date and time, this will also help keep track of who is who and when, make sure you got new batteries.

Flash light or other light sourse in case the power goes out, also new batteries

Towels and Sweaters, you can make some quick sweaters form old sweat shirts or sweat pant legs, wont look fancy but will help fend off the cold in extreme temps

Newspaper to put under each birth to catch the fluids to help keep pen dry and clean, and to keep kids from being born in siblings birthing fluids. makes for a cleaner birth

Paper Towels i like using paper towels better then cloth towels, they absorb the fluids and make cleaning a kid faster and cleaner, cloth towels seem to just smear the goo around not absorbing it like paper towels too, boy a big package or two you wont regret it. i use old feed sacks to gather the dirty ones in

Hair Dryer to help dry kids quickly

Dental Floss to tie of navel or shorten it

Sterilized Surgical Scissors to cut off navel cord that is too long

Tamed Iodine to coat kids navel

Ivory Soap and Container of Worm Water I use a large water thermos in the winter with hot water, by the time i need it is will have cooled... this will be used to wash your hands if you need to assist.

Long surgical gloves can be found at you local pharmacy and many feed stores, I no longer use this because i feel that it hinder my hands from feeling what i can not see.

Germ X i use this before i go in to assist

Water Based Lubricant such as KY Jelly or Ivory Soap, i use the Ivory

Uterine Boluses or Antibiotic found at your local feed store or vet, give a ND doe one bolus if you have enter her uterus to help prevent infection

Wash moms udder getting it ready for kids unless you pull kids at birth, in which case you start milking right away

A card board box to put kids in if you intend to pull them ( i don't unless requested )

Nasal Aspirator to remove mucus and any uterine fluids that might have gotten in the nose and mouth, helps kids get to breathing faster, clearing the nose and mouth also lessons the chance of newborn pneumonia

Feeding tube or syringe found at your vet or goat supply store to use to feed week kids

Pitchered Nipple bottle or baby bottle either will work, i like the Pitchered nipple, especially for newborns, i will milk mom and give their first sips from a bottle, this makes switching later on a bit easier and also starts the bond with me, even though i dam raise

Nutra Drench a squirt of Nutra Drench goes into the blood giving the kid a jump start

Scale to weigh the kids, i use a fishing scale, Nigerian Dwarf usually weigh between 2 - 4 lbs.

Popsicle stick and surgical tape to make splints for weak legs, a shot of BoSe will also help straighten and strengthen kids legs 1/4 cc in the muscle

Molasses Water for the mom gives mom energy and a reward for all her hard work, also a treat of grain or peanuts or cookies, now is the time to spoil her she has earned it.

I am excited for this to get underway. Not sure how excited i'll be when i am only half way through my herd. We will be kidding out ( assisting in delivering ) about 32 does, If you do the math that is A LOT of kids !!

In the mean time i am getting my Kidding Barn ready and gathering my Kidding Supplies

FENCING was made of 5ft and 4 ft. hog panels pieced together with tarp bungee cords, i have also seen this done with duck tape and others made of wood

HEAT SOURCE word of caution here, i use heat lamps cus I can afford them, make sure they are not too low that the will burn the doe, , many of them come with clamps DO NOT RELY ON THE CLAMPS, get baling wire and tie them securely on to something solid. I also have one hog heat pad, kind of pricey, you do not put bedding on this and the babies will lay on top, this is my first year using it, so no further comment given yet. Some people use warming boxes and i have some available if i feel they are needed. and goat/dog sweaters, I have a few on hand just in case. I however do not like using this sort of stuff, I do not like pampering them too much I feel that doing so makes it harder for them to adjust, but I will use them if I need to.

BEDDING I like to use straw bedding, for a couple of reasons, first is pine chips will stick to everything, and if you happen to miss the birth the chip bedding could cause the kid to smother, and also the air in the straw shafts hold heat and there fore the straw bedding is warmer. old feed sacks are use to clean up the after birth and any soiled betting to help keep the pen clean and dry.

BARN YARD LIME It is a good idea to have this on hand to be used after cleaning out the kidding pen between kiddings this will help keep oder down but most importantly helps keep the pen dry.

IN THE CORNER of my kidding barn I have a stack of hay and straw and grain so that i don't have to go out to find it in the dark or bad weather

FEEDERS/WATERS still working on improving this...I am going to use 5 gallon buckets to put hay in per doe per pen. i use the rectangle feed pans that fit on a 2X4 for horses for water and hang them high it holds may a gallon of water, have to be really careful with the waterer placement and the kids trying out their new legs could accidentally fall in. i use a round dish pan to feed the goats grain at this point, they wont yet get going to the milk stand for a few more days.

BABY MONITOR if you can't afford a barn cam then the way to go is baby monitor, You usually can find these in almost every garage sale you visit keep your eyes open. and gather a supply, great gifts for your goat friends or a new customer that bought a bred doe etc, You can hear any movement or sound that the does make, and the cry of a new born and often the cry of a doe giving birth, you can hear a doe talking to her unborn, or one that is restless and is up and down and digging a nest, this will save on a few trips to the barn. Others in the house can help listen while you get a short nap.

COT / SLEEPING BAG / RADIO / AND OTHER CREATURE COMFORTS FOR ME

There the barn is ready

Dear Children,

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season.

Maybe you've forgotten that I wasn't actually born during this time of the year and that it was some of your predecessors who decided to celebrate My birthday on what was actually a time of pagan festival.

(Although I do appreciate being remembered anytime.)

How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own.

I don't care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth, just
GET ALONG AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Now, having said that, let Me go on...If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn't allow a scene depicting My birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santas and snowmen and put a small Nativity scene on your own front lawn.

If all My followers did that there wouldn't be any need for such a scene on the town square because there would be many of them all around town.

Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a "holiday" tree, instead of a Christmas tree. It was I who made all trees. You can remember Me any time you see any tree. Decorate a grape vine if you wish. (I actually spoke of that one in a teaching, explaining who I am in relation to you and what each of our tasks were. If you have forgotten that one, look up John 15:1-8.)

If you want to give Me a present in remembrance of My birth, here is My wish list. Choose something from it:

1. Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way My birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are terribly afraid and lonely this time of year. I know, they tell Me all the time.

2. Visit someone in a nursing home. You don't have to know them personally. They just need to know that someone cares about them.

3. Instead of writing letters to someone complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sent out this year, why don't you write and tell them that you'll be praying for them and their family this year. Then follow up...it will be nice hearing from you again.

4. Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you can't afford and they don't need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of My birth, and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that I love them.

5. Pick someone that has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her.

6. Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don't know who that person is, try giving everyone that you meet a warm smile; it could make the difference.

7. Instead of nit picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren't allowed to wish you a "Merry Christmas" that doesn't keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store didn't make so much money on that day, they'd close and let their employees attend worship and spend the day at home with their families.

8. If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary--especially one who takes My love and Good News to those who have never heard My name.

9. Here's a good one: There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no "Christmas" tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don't know them, buy some food and a few gifts and give them to the Salvation Army or some other charity which believes in Me, and they will make the delivery for you.

10. Finally, if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to ME, then behave like a Christian. Don't do things in secret that you wouldn't do in My presence. Let people know by your actions that you are one of Mine.

Don't forget: I am God and can take care of Myself. Just love Me and do what I have told you to do. I'll take care of all the rest. Check out the list above and get to work; time is short. I'll help you, but the ball is now in your court.

And do have a Blessed Christmas with all those whom you love,
and remember...

I LOVE YOU,
JESUS

Merry CHRISTmas to all of you!

GIFT OF THE OLD ONE
by Eunice Day, Washington , ME.

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas

visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of goats. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man And his wife, and a landmark in the countryside.

The old folks no longer showed their goats, for the years had taken their toll, but they sold a little milk, and a few kids each year and the goats were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day's end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of "The Old One?” She is no longer of use to you. It's been years since you've had either kids or milk from her. You should cut corners and save where you can. Why do you keep her anyway?" The old man looked down as his worn boot scuffed at the barn floor and his arm stole defensively about the Old One's neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears. He replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Only because of love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One.”

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved goats. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back.

He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire's fury.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared."

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most boughs, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this. Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward. There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift.

Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the goats through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The kids were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The milkers pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved. Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift Because of love, Only Because of love.Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-81521050264572087662010-12-05T20:47:00.000-06:002010-12-05T20:47:48.668-06:00Nanqu

I let my goats out this afternoon, before I let them out I look to see where the cows are, and i didn't see them, so they took off south over the hill and I really couldn't see them, then I went and did chores, turn around and here come the cows,,humm,,, I get a bit worried,,,, the cows aren't used to seeing the goats in their pasture, they were curious, perhaps a bit too curious. I could see the cows standing at attention, watching so I knew that they had seen them, then they started walking towards the goats, I couldn't see the goats but I knew they were over in that direction, , I'm getting a bit nervous, I mouth a quick prayer for wisdom and protection for my dog Nanqu and goats,. then a few minutes later here they come, he brings them home (slowly), no panic,, standing in front of the goats between the cows. bringing them back to safety. It was beautiful to watch, and of course i didn't have my phone or camera with me. I didn't want to turn away because I was really curious to see how and what he would do to handle this situation...He is definitely worth he weight in gold...and better yet he is only 1 year old..I look forward to many good years with this oneCarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4335519936837895188.post-4843328195115272812010-12-04T17:38:00.001-06:002010-12-04T18:02:21.879-06:00Second Trailer Full of Recycled Leaf bedding and Pumpkins

I admit i was sceptically jumping in with both feet so to speak. Someone posted a you tube video of how to make homemade laundry soap, and i thought WOW.. I have been having trouble getting my close to smell clean, especially if i didn't get it in the dryer as soon as the washer stopped. I think we might have a bit of sulfur in our well water, not enough to make the water smell bad as soon as it came out of the hydrant but it would sour dish rags in a hurry, apparently the smell settled in my washer.. Doing laundry was quickly becoming a nightmare, i felt defeated as the clothes still smelled bad afterwards. I even went and purchased the expensive stuff to see if that would help, it didn't.. So I didn't have anything to loose by trying this homemade soap.

WOW is right)

Now as with everything, I modified this recipe to fit my needs, we have hard water, so I used 1 cup each of the Soda and Borax.. and I probably will use soda feed grade, I simply can't tell a difference except the label and packaging.. And so then I fell in love with my towels again..I was TOTALLY AMAZED !! The expensive stuff just perfumed the smelly closes. The HOMEMADE laundry soap made my clothes CLEAN!

Shortly after that I watched another video and this one was basically the same recipe except she diluted the bar soap into liquid form and made a liquid soap.. Take a look ..

But GOD is good.. He laid on my mind the idea of posting an ad asking for salvaged simi tarps..with in a week i recieved 5 tarps WOW is right !! 3 are probably in the area of 40 ft long and 2 are a bit smaller. I am soo grateful. We will continue working on the tarp hut as soon as the snow melts.Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00366625357038641517noreply@blogger.com1
